SMP Removal
Alongside our hair loss treatments, we provide safe and effective removal and correction of poorly executed scalp micropigmentation at our Purley clinic.
Scalp Micropigmentation Removal & Repair
As SMP pigments and application techniques have evolved, healed results are now far more consistent. However, there are still many cases of older or poorly executed scalp micropigmentation where pigment has faded to blue, blurred under the skin, or migrated beyond the intended hairline.
At Simply Scalp, we provide professional SMP removal and correction for clients seeking to improve or completely remove previous work. Issues such as discolouration, uneven density, or poor design can often be significantly improved before considering fresh treatment. You can view examples of corrective work in our results gallery.
Reasons for SMP Removal Or Repair
Clients seek removal or repair for various reasons. In some cases, pigment has changed colour due to sun exposure or outdated inks. Others may wish to adjust a hairline that no longer suits their age or facial structure. Some clients simply decide to embrace their natural hairline without SMP.
Removal may also be necessary before undergoing corrective treatment for men or clients managing alopecia, where tone and placement must be carefully refined. For insight into client experiences, you may wish to read our reviews.
How the Removal works
We use advanced Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser technology to break down pigment safely within the skin. The laser shatters pigment particles, allowing your body’s lymphatic system to gradually clear them. Most SMP removal cases require approximately two to three sessions, depending on pigment depth and saturation.
Sessions are spaced to allow proper healing and pigment clearance, as rushing the process can compromise results. Aftercare guidance is provided to protect the scalp during healing.
If you are considering removal to prepare for scar refinement or a revised hairline design, this can be discussed during consultation.
Before & After SMP Removal
Frequently Asked Questions:
The number of sessions required depends on several factors, including the age of the SMP, pigment depth, colour saturation and how your skin responds to laser treatment. Most scalp micropigmentation cases require between two and three sessions for significant lightening or removal. Older or heavily saturated pigment may require additional treatments. Sessions are spaced several weeks apart to allow the body time to break down and clear the fragmented pigment particles. A consultation will provide a more accurate estimate based on your individual case.
Most clients describe the sensation as mild to moderate discomfort rather than severe pain. The feeling is often compared to a light snapping sensation against the skin. Because the scalp is a sensitive area, discomfort levels can vary depending on the treatment zone. Cooling methods and careful technique help minimise irritation during the session. Any sensitivity typically subsides shortly after treatment.
When performed correctly using medical-grade Q-Switched laser technology, SMP removal is designed to target pigment without damaging surrounding tissue. The laser energy focuses on breaking down ink particles rather than affecting hair follicles. Temporary redness or mild swelling is normal, but long-term damage is uncommon when aftercare instructions are followed properly. It is important that removal is performed by a trained practitioner experienced specifically in scalp treatments. During consultation, your scalp condition will be assessed to ensure safe treatment planning.
Yes, in many cases removal is performed specifically to prepare the scalp for improved or corrected SMP. Once the pigment has lightened sufficiently and the skin has healed fully, new work can be planned. This may involve adjusting hairline design, correcting tone, or improving density. Adequate healing time between removal and new application is essential to achieve the best results. Your practitioner will advise when it is safe to proceed.
Immediately after treatment, the scalp may appear slightly red or feel warm. This typically settles within a few hours to a couple of days. It is important to avoid excessive sun exposure, sweating, swimming and harsh scalp products during the initial healing period. Over the following weeks, your body gradually clears the fragmented pigment through the lymphatic system. A follow-up appointment is scheduled to assess progress and determine whether additional sessions are required.
