What scalp micropigmentation really feels like — and how to prepare
One of the most common questions I get asked before a first session is whether SMP hurts. It’s a completely fair thing to wonder about, and I’d rather give you an honest answer than vague reassurance. Scalp micropigmentation pain is genuinely manageable for the vast majority of clients, but everyone’s experience is a little different.
How does SMP actually feel?
Most clients describe the sensation as similar to light scratching or a gentle tapping on the scalp. It’s not the same as a body tattoo — the needles used in scalp micropigmentation are much finer and work only at a shallow depth in the skin.
Does SMP hurt in a way that’s hard to push through? For most people, no. The majority of my clients are genuinely surprised by how tolerable it is. Some areas of the scalp are more sensitive than others — the temples and the back of the head around the occipital bone tend to be where things are felt most acutely.
Micropigmentation discomfort, where it does occur, is usually described as mild and intermittent rather than constant. Sessions are broken into manageable periods, which helps considerably.
Numbing options and pain management
Client comfort is always a priority at Simply Scalp. I don’t apply or provide numbing products as part of the treatment, but if you prefer to use a topical numbing cream, you’re welcome to apply it yourself before your appointment.
Most clients find the sensation very manageable without any numbing. It’s often described as a light scratching or tapping feeling rather than anything sharp or intense. I also work at a pace that suits you, so you’re always in control. If you need a break at any point, just let me know.
It’s also worth knowing that scalp micropigmentation can feel slightly different across sessions. The first is often the most noticeable, simply because the skin is being worked for the first time. By the second and third sessions, many clients find things easier — partly because they know what to expect, and partly because the skin responds differently to subsequent passes.
What you can do to make sessions more comfortable
A few practical steps genuinely make a difference. Coming in well-rested and well-hydrated helps your skin respond better. Avoiding alcohol the night before is also a good idea, as it can thin the blood and increase sensitivity.
Eating beforehand matters more than most people realise. Arriving on an empty stomach can leave you feeling lightheaded during the session, which nobody wants. A proper meal a couple of hours before makes a real difference to how you feel overall.
If you take any blood-thinning medications or supplements, let me know in advance. Things like aspirin, ibuprofen, and fish oil can all increase sensitivity and affect how the skin holds pigment. Does SMP hurt more when the skin is compromised? It can — which is exactly why I cover this during the consultation.
I also recommend wearing comfortable clothing and giving yourself a little time either side of each appointment. Arriving stressed or in a rush doesn’t set you up well. The more relaxed you are, the easier the session tends to be.
Micropigmentation discomfort is usually at its lowest when clients feel informed and at ease. That’s why I take proper time at consultation to walk through exactly what to expect, so nothing on the day comes as a surprise.
Putting SMP into perspective
Compared to many other cosmetic procedures, scalp micropigmentation sits at the more comfortable end of the spectrum. There’s no surgery, no recovery period, and most clients leave feeling absolutely fine and ready to get on with their day.
I’ve had clients come in genuinely nervous about scalp micropigmentation pain who’ve finished their session telling me it was far easier than expected. That happens regularly, and it’s always a good moment. If you’d like to know what a session at Simply Scalp would specifically involve for you, I’m always happy to have a chat before you commit to anything. No obligation — just a straight answer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is scalp micropigmentation pain bad enough to put people off?
Most clients are pleasantly surprised by how manageable it is. Scalp micropigmentation is generally described as mild scratching or tapping rather than anything sharp or intense. Even without numbing, the vast majority of people find sessions completely tolerable from start to finish.
Does SMP hurt more in certain areas of the scalp?
Yes, some areas are more sensitive than others. The temples and the lower back of the scalp around the occipital bone tend to be where clients feel the most sensation. The top of the scalp is usually the most comfortable area to work on, so sensitivity is not uniform across the head.
Can I use numbing cream before my SMP session?
Yes — if you’d like to use a topical numbing cream, you can apply it yourself before arriving for your appointment. While it isn’t something I provide or apply during the session, some clients choose to use it in advance for added comfort.
How long does each SMP session last and does that affect comfort?
Sessions typically run between two and four hours depending on the stage of treatment. Micropigmentation discomfort, where present, is usually easier to manage in shorter intervals. I work methodically and build in natural pauses, so there’s no pressure to sit through long stretches without a break if you need one.
Do later sessions feel different to the first one?
Many clients find subsequent sessions easier than the first. Part of this is psychological — knowing what to expect makes a real difference. The skin also responds slightly differently on repeat sessions. Scalp micropigmentation pain, where experienced, tends to feel less significant by the second and third appointments for most people.
